XIX International Reunion for the History of Nautical Science Magellan, Elcano and the circumnavigations. Seville, 7th-9th October 2020 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dear\n colleagues, The International Committee for the History of Nautical \nScience is pleased to announce the upcoming international conference on \n\u00abMagellan, Elcano and the circumnavigations\u00bb, being the Nineteenth \nInternational Reunion for the History of Nautical Science (IRHNS XIX). \nThe conference will take place on 7th-9th October 2020 in Seville \n(Spain), hosted by the Pablo de Olavide University and the Spanish \nNational Research Council (CSIC). <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Since\n 1968, previous IRHNS conferences have addressed issues concerning \ntechnical aspects of navigation, essentially History of Nautical \nScience, History of Nautical Cartography, and History of the Ship. At \nIRHNS IV, which took place in 1983, there was an opening for disciplines\n such as Maritime History, Cultural History of Navigation or Underwater \nArchaeology, which continue to be part of the thematic scope of the \nmeetings. Each of them has followed a general subject and a geographical\n or chronological framework. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On\n occasion of the fifth centenary of the first circumnavigation of the \nworld, the IRHNS XIX will be dedicated to analyzing and discussing \nscientific and nautical aspects (including cultural, practical and \ntheoretical subjects) connected to Magellan and Elcano\u2019s navigation. The\n conference will be open to dialogue on scientific issues related to the\n first oceanic voyages across the oceans, great sailings and other \ncircumnavigations from the 16th to the 21st century. In line with this, \nthe conference theme will be \u00abMagellan, Elcano and the \ncircumnavigations\u00bb. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

IRHNS\n XIX seeks to provide a forum for scholars and researchers of Nautical \nScience, Maritime History, Underwater Archaeology and other related \ndisciplines to present on their latest research. The organization \ninvites interested young postgraduate researchers to apply. IRHNS XIX \nalso wishes to create awareness among graduate students and wider public\n of the interest in nautical science within the broad field of maritime \nhistory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n \u00a8 Proposals: We welcome original papers in English, French, Portuguese \nor Spanish, on the conference theme or any related topic. Individual \noral presentations must be 20 minutes in length, followed by 10 minutes \nfor questions and discussion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a8\n Submissions: Proposals must be written in English, French, Portuguese \nor Spanish, and sent as email attachments to the following email \naddress: irhns.sevilla@gmail.com<\/a>. Please make sure that your submission (one Word\/pdf file) includes the following information: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Title of paper and up to five keywords <\/p>\n\n\n\n

– One-page abstract no longer than 350 words. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Author\u2019s\/Authors\u2019 name(s) and affiliation(s) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

– E-mail address(es) and postal address(es) – Audio-visual equipment required (computer, video, etc.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please name this file \u201cSURNAME_Name\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a8\n Deadline for reception of abstracts is 15th March 2020. Proposals will \nbe peer-reviewed and notification of acceptance will be sent by 15th \nApril 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a8 No fees will be required to participate in this conference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a8 A selection of papers will be published in a double-blind peer-reviewed edited volume. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
